The SAVE JAPAN! PROJECT was started by Kaie Murakami from SIMONE with the help of colleagues and corporate partners. The project commenced within six hours of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake on March 11 to disseminate information about damage using Twitter and Facebook.
The SAVE JAPAN! PROJECT has contributed to the provision of useful damage and safety information for victims of the March disaster. We quickly established an information standard for mass information exchange such as creating the Twitter hashtag (#save_) and its associated website. The site recorded 780,000 page views within 48 hours of the launch. It immediately became an integral part of the infrastructure of information provided for the earthquake victims (March 14, 2011). Our tag became recognized as a major public information source and has been used by NHK’s official Twitter page and other public information and social media.
We have been offered interviews with CNN, Asahi Newspaper, Yomiuri Newspaper, and media from all over the world because we for creating a portal website derived from social media using specialized website building skills. Our creative director, Kaie Murakami, well known in the Japanese fashion industry, took the initiative in creating the site, while individuals experienced in the charity sector provided a course of necessary action at times of disaster. We would like to be a charity hub within the industries using our network.
